Watanabe worked as an assistant director and participated in director Seijun Suzuki's movie ”Zigeunerweisen” as well as other movies by director Kazuki Omori and Toshiya Fujita. Watanabe made his debut as a movie director in 1989 with the movie ”Kimi wa boku o sukininaru”.
